10th anniversary edition/Covid edition!

10th anniversary edition/Covid edition!
We were not allowed on the football field at games this season so we spent our season in the stands spinning β€œswing flags”. None the less, our spirits stayed high and we were able to put together an exciting performance with our Auxiliary sisters (Pom and Twirlers) along with our drumline.

What you need to know for THOSE INTERESTED IN THE SOSA COLORGUARD….

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND UTSA TO BE IN the color guard?

You must be enrolled at UTSA in order to be in the guard. The color guard is an official part of the SOSA Marching band and is an official class. Each member MUST take the one-credit class once on the team. Class/team rehearsals are held Mon/wed/friday 6-9:30pm. We no longer accept community college students as members of SOSA.

What should I bring?

Yourself, water bottle, and a positive attitude! Equipment will be provided.

What should I wear?

Form fitting clothing that does not restrict movement and allows for body lines to clearly be seen. No jeans, long pants, or overly baggy clothing. Tennis shoes are a must. No large jewelry. Hair and make up should be performance quality.

What type of things will I have to do for the assessment?

Guard - You will be expected to demonstrate skills both movement and flag oriented. Ie. plies, tendus, across the floors, spins, tosses, carves, etc. In addition to those colorguard skills you will be observed throughout the audition process on your ability to learn, enthusiasm, projection, technique, showmanship and overall performance. We will be looking for your potential and ability to become a collegiate colorguard member and performer.*All skill levels are encouraged to audition!

Does the colorguard spin weapons?

Yes, the UTSA colorguard will hold an optional audition for rifle later in the season. Your ability or interest in the rifle line will in no way affect your evaluation. The evaluation process is based solely on dance and flag, and or twirling.

DOES IT COST ANY MONEY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE Assessment?

No. It does not cost you to participate.

WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I MADE THE TEAM?

You will know if you have made the team or not within a week after the day of the auditions.

WILL HOUSING BE PROVIDED FOR Assessments?

No. You will need to find your own accommodations for audition dates. There a few hotels near campus should you need a place to stay.

Video Auditions/assessments for out of town students -

If you are an incoming UTSA freshman from out of state and cannot make the audition date, you will be allowed to submit a videotape of yourself performing on your chosen section.

Guard must demonstrate drop spins, peggy spins (aka overhand spins), cones, pull hits, thumb flips, and any other basic flag skills you may do at your school that would demonstrate your control/skill with the equipment. You'll need to demonstrate that you're able to execute multiple tosses, including a basic pop toss, a standard double, a parallel toss, and a basic 45 toss.

Please submit videos to:

UTSA Department of Music
